Yesterday, I painted this terribly garish plein air watercolor. Although Im not really happy with this painting, it is a siginifigant piece to me in that Ive never tried to capture a fleeting moment of human gesture in a plein air painting before. I think I was labelled a pervert a few times, by passing parents, while painting this...I suppose crouching over, hidden in a bush, moving my hand back and forth rapidly, overlooking children playing about in a park looks rather suspect. People seemed rather concerned.

Back from Ucluelet - Watercolour plein air

How lucky am I to have just spent 6 days in Ucluelet with my lovely wife and hilarious dog. The west coast of Vancouver Island is nothing short of magical. The forest is weathered and wise, the sea is healthy and alive. Walking in the forest, surfing the waves, eating the fish quickly led to a euphoric state of being. To sit on the coast under an umbrella and siphon my experience of being there through a paint brush was profound.

Here is the resulting painting of that expereince, a photo of my setup on the Pacific Trail, and a sign I found in the aquarium that so eloquently articulated my feelings of being there.

Holy crapola last week was insane. I did 45 hours of design at Nitrogen Studios, and 40 hours of storyboarding on Voltron for Eh Ok studios, as well as 8 hours of commuting and a wedding! I am destroyed. BUT I got it all done!

Heres some sketches I did a few weeks back on my lunch hour with my good buddy Kevin Phibbs. These were drawn with marker at the Commercial Skytrain station.....

One of my favorite places is Buntzen Lake, B.C. Not only is it geographically beautiful, there is an awesome dog park right on the water. My wife and I are easily entertained, bringing our little fur ball there to play with the many other dogs. Right now the lake has been flooded by the hydro plant. On Saturday, I saw this young kid, maybe 12 or 13 years old, climbing around on this partially submerged picnic table. The uninhibited display of calm yet playful interaction struck me. I was able to get down a quick pencil sketch, which I took home and used to create my latest watercolour painting. Good times.

Recently I found a gem. I little patio on the notorious corner of Hastings and Main street, downtown Vancouver. Hippies, tourists, yuppies, junkies, and even a transvestite (page 2). But seriously the diversity of race, age and action was fucking fantastic. Why the past tense? Well, I brought my good buddy Kevin with me last Friday. A few bad ass drug dealers decided we were police trying to draw them and sounded some sort of ghetto alarm which instantly exploded the corner into panicky chaos. Long story short Kevin and I almost got stabbed trying to get out of there. Bummer. The end of a good thing. Here's some of the sketches....I started in pencil and quickly moved to super fun brush marker.

I submitted the top image here to Imaginism Studio's latest art contest, coinciding with an Alberto Ruiz interview. The topic Alberto chose was "girl collage", and I couldnt help but tackle it in watercolour. There were some really great entries, and more then anything its awesome to see a community centered around being excited about art. I was a runner up with the most user votes and I won a free book from Alberto's Brand Studios!

Well, Ive decided I want to improve my figurative work...
These sketches are 1-2 minutes sharpy marker and brush pen gestures.
I also decided to try and tackle watercolour life drawing...Wow, fun, but I find it more difficult then getting my shi-tzu to permanently walk upright.
Anyways, Im not satisfied with these paintings but I want this blog to be an honest display of my development. The top one is totally overworked as a result of me really wrestling with the tonal relationships. The second took a lot fewer passes, but still is not as spontaneous as I would like. Although, I am rather proud of her left elbow. Now to get the other 98% working....

I have returned to my all time favorite painting medium, gouache. Oh how fun it is! After a 6 month stint on watercolor, which I certainly will not abandon, being able to paint light over dark is sooooo nice. Being able to paint OVER anything is nice actually. I love that gouache can be applied opaquely or transparently.

Unfortunately, I can never get a scan to look as good as the original. But, whatev....you get the idea.

I remember being on a subway in Toronto sketching with Bob Chiu. I took a moment to watch him finesse some beautiful line work with a ballpoint pen. We were bumping around, swaying, vibrating with the stop and go movements of the train, yet his line work remained elegant. I inquired as to how he did this and he looked at me with his eternal intensity and said, "Jesse, its all about the gyroscope man." He demonstrated with exaggeration his body moving around wildly while his hand holding his sketchbook hovered in a still manor.

Years later I have yet to master the "gyroscope", so I hold my pencil like Peter DeSeve, on its side, and try to embrace the jumpy line work.

Anyways, heres a quick doodle from this mornings commute to the studio, with a quick photoshoping for some colour.

Great times at the beach with wifey, woofey, watercolours and some beers. The rain stopped Saturday, and we jumped in the shit-mobile and headed to the ocean. I was pleased to experience some of my favorite painting weather, with strong sunlight but with thick atmosphere and interesting cloud formations. Fun fun fun.

I recently spent 6 days hangin in Tofino BC with my wife and brother-in-law. Good times indeed. Lots of surfin, swimmin, hiking, eating and yes even some drinking. We went on a whale tour and saw grey and humpback whales. Incredible!

Heres a plein air watercolour I did on the beach. Between drinking scotch and painting this I didnt notice the tide come in and I got stuck on a rocky cliff thingy. Got back safely with my legs banged up enough to prove I was havin some good fun.

This is the largest watercolour Ive done yet. The original image is 12x19 inches.

Im having fun practicing for now. As well as these two characters I did 3 pages of just experimenting with various techniques of applying watercolor resulting is a mess of abstract shapes and colors. Its definitely a lot of fun but I can see that its gonna take a lot more practice. Next I would like to try a looser approach where I am not defining every shape. John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer are huge inspiration to me.

I work at Nitrogen Studios Canada as a production designer. A few blocks away is a wonderful park on the Pacific Ocean. Theres lots to paint. I do however have to hide from inquisitive yuppies with annoying questions. Children ask smarter question like, "Do you like to paint?". Conversations with yuppies are more like, "What are you making?" "A painting." "Why?" Seems sitting in a cubicle erodes your brain as well as your soul.

Anyways, guess I should stop before I offend too many. Heres the painting I did.

My boss gave me a little side project on Monday. Took a break from designing for the new THomas the Tank Engine to do these paintings. The bass player is my take on a very cool dude who played great rockabilly in a band at our staff Xmas party. Man did this guy rock! The WIcket meets Pikachu is for his son who requested something to do with Star Wars AND Pokemon. He he. Well it was good fun on company time and more gauche practice for my dog project.

These are gouache paintings i did refining my technique and style for a project i am working on. As I have relized from peoples reactions to my dog art, style is not as impactful as the emotional connection with the dog. People really seem to respond to the bulldog top right (although I feel the Bull Terrier on the bottom is the strongest painting), because of his strong emotion. So....this is certainly something I will really focus on in further developement of this project, because the whole point is to connect with dog owners.
Next I will try my hand at longer hair breeds like the German SHepard.

Ahh yes, i return to blogging wondering what excuse to give for abandoning post. Well, my sweetheart had to leave Canada because of immigration problems. I chased her down in Australia with an emerald engagement ring. Just got back to Canada, a married man, with Jo my wife at my side. YAY.....

Anyhow, although there were no animation studios around the small town we were staying in Aus, I ran into the owner of a Kiteboarding company that hired me to do some designs. It was really fun, and for part of my payment I got Kiteboarding lessons....which is AWESOME.

finished this oil painting the other night, done from a previous digital painting i did. 1 x 2 foot wood panel. although the actual brush on panel time was around 15 hours, the painting took me 2 months because i was glazing. I had to let each pass dry before applying another coat.

Heres three guache paintings i did last night (my idea of a great friday night, stayin in drikin a bottle of wine and painting!). I framed them and will give them to my little cousins for christmas. Im sure they will like them, however the one with the all white scotty dog is the only one of the three i am feelin. Figured Id post all 3 though. 1 outta 3 aint bad.
This is great practice for the buisiness that I am launching febuary 2009, which will involve guache illusrations of dogs and people.

digital rough for oil painting of mystical girl

i did this digital a while back. Ive been working on painting this image on a wood 1 by 2 foot wood panel with my gamblin oil paint for off and on for about 5 weeks now. Im using a glazing technique, which is going well, but is extremely slow as I let each nearly tranparent layer dry before adding another pass. The trick is to forget about the painting for a week every time I do another pass of lighting. The skin is about 75% done now after 4 passes. Hair after that and its done....
will post photos shortly.

Theres two possibilities here.
A
A grim reaper has conditioned a young female into his perfect apprentice. A sexy puppet of death, she lures in unsuspecting men to certain fatality.
B
A cunning young woman has used her smarts and sex appeal to move up in the ranks of the underworld, eventually earning the affection of a reaper. Death thinks he has the upper hand, when really he is being manipulated.

my girlfriend is starting to question my tendancy to sketch naked ladies. shes so much more beautiful then any of the women I draw. I wish I could draw women as beautiful as she is. (and for the record, she doesnt look at my blogs and I am not trying desperately to earn brownie points, just being honest really) I try and draw her and fail misserably. so instead I draw the grim reaper and his fling. soon to be a painting.

this man is a genius. I saw him, along with Toki Wright and Blueprint perform in Vancouver last week. Freekin awsome. Super passionate, intellectual, possitive, hip hop. Sucks what the masses are exposed to of this music genre is exactly the opposite.

My moms, bless her soul, attended a Janis Joplin & Jimmy Hendrix concert in the 60's. She sold enough dope to the concert goers to put food on the table for her and my older brother for six months.

I love Jimmys music. Who doesnt. Soooo powerful.

Heres my attempt at imagining what its like to see him perform, while under the influence of the sort of thing that is essentially mandatory in such a situation.

a lot of the work I do has a very specific role to fill in a production, as I work in the animation industry. I think when I am doing art for the sake of art, like this peice, I sometimes free associate more, allowing my work to go in more abnormal directions.
